The origin of this nickname is unknown, certainly beginning with a nickname. The oldest person who appears with him is Lourenço C., bailiff of Justice and bailiff of Beira in the reign of D. Afonso VI, as seen from a provision of the same prince dated 12-IV-1335. In the time of D. Afonso V lived Martim C. escudeiro of Casa Real, aide to a nephew of the same King, mayor of the hills of the term of Lisbon, office that gave to the King by 5400 white royals of annual fee, granted by Letter of 13- XI-1455, later knight of the House of the same sovereign and accountant of the Setúbal region by Letter of 14-X-1465.
