Antigua familia siciliana, de clara y ancestral virtud, de la que tenemos noticias de principios del siglo XVIII, que se extendieron a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, por decir lo menos de los genealogistas ilustres, debe buscarse en una modificación del término griego "Khilíarkhos", que es "comandante de los mil", equivalente al "tribuno" latino, probablemente para indicar que un progenitor, hoy desconocido un puesto militar y administrativo al mismo tiempo. En cualquier caso, esta familia, probablemente, fue admitida a los honores y privilegios de la caballería, después de la participación, bajo las banderas aragonesas, caracterizadas por el coraje y la virtud, de un Miguel Ángel Calarco en la guerra de Otranto, de 1481, contra el Otomanos Pero, por otro lado, la familia, en todas las épocas, siempre logró destacarse, gracias a los altos personajes, a los que dio a luz.
