Il Galuppi vuole che, questa antica ed illustre famiglia, sia originaria di Recanati. Godette di nobiltà in Messina, ed in Milazzo. Un Domenico Calcagna fu commendatore dell'Ordine di Malta e, luogotenente del Gran Priore nel 1712; un Diego Calcagna, cavaliere dell'ordine di S. Stefano, fu confrate della nobile arci-confraternita della Pace e dei Bianchi, di detta città. Molti membri di questa famiglia vestirono la toga senatoria di Messina ed un Carlo, senatore di detta città negli anni 1743-44 e 1744-45, console nobile della seta nel 1757-58, con Real dispaccio del 25 novembre 1747 eseguito il 21 febbraio 1752, ottenne la concessione del titolo di marchese, nel quale titolo gli succedette il figlio Diego, governatore della Tavola Pecuniaria di Messina negli anni 1777-78, che ottenne investitura di detto titolo l'11 marzo 1784. Un Giovan Filippo Calcagna, del fu Annibale, con privilegio dell'11 gennaio 1641 ottenne il titolo di barone delle Taude
