Lggendarie sono le origini della famiglia Calcagnini, che vuolsi esser venuta in Italia dalla Germania; ma di positivo si sa che essa fioriva a Rovigo fin dal principio del secolo XIII, trovandosi ricordati in antiche carte rodigine un Fresco o Francesco, qualificato come miles styenuus, che viveva nel 1242, e dopo di lui, parecchi altri di quel casato. Nel seguente secolo Galvano Calcagnini sposò Livia Pisani, e da lei ebbe Nicola, che col figlio Francesco passò ai servizi di Gianfranco I Gonzaga, dal quale nel 1441, con ampio diploma, essi vennero creati cittadini di Mantova. Ritornati ambedue in patria, Francesco fu chiamato alla corte di Ferrara, ove Teofili tredicesimo dei suoi numerosissimi figli (1431-1488), gettò le basi della grandezza di sua gente, grazie ai favori dei quali gli furono larghi i duchi Borso ed Ercole I.
