Antica famiglia originaria di Bologna, da cui sembra che, nel 1415, l'abbia trapiantata in Verona un Bartolomeo, figlio di Mastro Antonio Calcara. Non è per certo che la famiglia patrizia omonima abbia avuto la stessa origine. Questa fu rinomata in Verona al tempo degli Scaligeri, e poi nel 1547 al tempo della riforma del nobile Consiglio, ove ne ottenne l'aggregazione. Le famiglie forestiere, le quali dopo il 1420 vennero ad abitare in Verona, e che, avendo possedimenti in città o nel territorio, quantunque molte tra loro fossero d'origine illustre, pure salvo qualche caso non venivano aggregate al Nobile Consiglio se non dopo un mezzo secolo ed altre dopo cent'anni ed anche più. Quelle che fossero state nobili, appena erano ammesse al Consiglio, divenivano tali. Ma non è da credere che tutte abbiano acquistato la nobiltà nell'anno, in cui cominciarono ad appartenergli; parecchie di loro erano eran già nobili prima dell'esserci
