La maggior gloria di questa nobile famiglia è senza meno S. Giovanni detto comunemente da Matera, eremita e fondatore della vita eremitica del monte Gargano, dove morì nel 1139 e nel medesimo anno fu canonizzato. Circa tre secoli dopo da quell'epoca memoranda si rinviene della stessa stirpe un Tuccio filosofo e medico celebratissimo il quale servì prima il principe di Bisignano e fu poscia archiatro della corte regnante e possessore del feudo detto Stisca della Rotella. Giovanni de Scalzonibus fu sindaco de' nobili nel 1626-27; Felice-Antonio dott. in leggi, protonotario apostolico, arciprete e parroco della Collegiata di S. Pietro nello stesso secolo.
