Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di origine francese, con prima residenza in Nantes ed ivi conosciuta anche come Calett o Calet, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni di Francia e d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, tutt'ora avvolta nelle tenebre, al dir di molti genealogisti, sarebbe riconducibile, al popolo delle Gallie, detto Caletti, di cui il grande Giulio Cesare, narra nei suoi Commentarii (De Bel. Gal. lib. 2 e lib. 7), i quali abitavano ove, attualmente, sorge la diocesi di Bayeux. Molti dei membri di tal casato si distinsero per l'abilità nelle armi e, tra i più importanti personaggi che la illustrano, non possiamo tacere: Charles, consigliere e familiare della regina, nel 1513 e Guillame, funzionario della cancelleria di Nantes, nel 1612.
