Antica ed assai illustre famiglia siciliana, la quale godette nobiltá in Acireale ed in Catania, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nell'accorciativo del cognome greco "kalìs" ("kalès", in greco antico), basato, a sua volta, sul vocabolo greco "kalos" (= bello). In ogni modo, tal casato, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, ricordiamo: notar Giuliano, che, con privilegio del 23 ottobre 1398, ottenne la foresta di Millacha; notar Girolamo, il quale fu vice-secreto di Licata nel 1409; Agostino, il quale fu razionale del tribunale del R.
