En las Bienandanzas e fortunas, de Lope García de Salazar, se dice que esta apellido aparece por primera vez en un sitio llamado la C., en las inmediaciones de Santander. Añade que el varón más antiguo de este linaje, que se recuerda, es Gonzalo Gutiérrez de la C., que fué del bando de Juan Gutiérrez de Escalante, y que tuvo por hijo a otro Gonzalo Gutiérrez de la C., que no dejó hijos legítimos, por lo que continuaron los bastardos el apellido. Este se extendió por la provincia de Santander y tuvo una casa junto a Laredo y otra en el lugar de Muriedas, del Ayuntamiento de Camargo. Pasó a las provincias de Burgos, Asturias y León.
