Descende a famìlia dos Câmaras da dos Zarcos, antiga em Portugal. Joâo Gonçalves Zarco, cavaleiro da Casa do Infante D.Henrique, que o armou cavaleiro na tomada de Ceuta, foi criado do Infante D.Fernando e o descobridor da Madeira o que Fez por ordem do Infante D: Henrique, que em recompensa lhe deu a capitania dela. Por ter desemarcado junto do Funchal, no sitio chamado Câmara de Lobos, com armas novas, falantes. O apelido nâo de continuou na forma originària, mas sômente na de Câmara ou Camara. Joâo Gonçalves da Câmara de Lobos casou com Costança Rodrigues de Sà, filha de Rodrigo Anes de Sà e de Mécia Rodrigues do Avelar, de quem teves numerosa geraçâo que levou o sangue e apelido dos Câmaras às mais ilustres famìlias.
