I membri della famiglia derivano dalla stirpe degli antichi signori di Querceto; castello situato nel territorio di Volterra. Venuti in Firenze vi acquistarono la cittadinanza e furono ammessi al godimento degli uffici pubblici, e troviamo che hanno dato alla Repubblica 14 Priori. Cenni, di Domenico, di Cambio fu, nel 1364, spedito come ambasciatore in Val di Nievole. Bernardo, di Giovanni, di Domenico, marito di Caterina Capponi, fu destinato di accompagnare ai confini dello Stato, insieme alla moglie e altri gentiluomini, l'imperatrice che si recava a Roma nel 1455. Lorenzo, di Antonio, nel 1520, fu fatto castellano della fortezza di Rimini e poi Nobile di questa città per decreto papale. Nel 1523 fu Commissario della città di Prato e nel 1526 Commissario generale di guerra della Repubblica e incaricato di assoldare truppe per soccorrere il papa. Nel 1553 fu scelto per accompagnare da Bologna a Firenze Margherita d'Austria, che veniva sposa
