Antica famiglia toscana, con residenza nella città di Pistoia, di chiara ed avita nobiltà, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. A tal illustre casato, appartenne quel Francesco, di Antonio Cammei, prevosto della cattedrale sullo scorcio del XV secolo. Egli era un uomo d'alta dottrina e senno; e quantunque sacerdote era autorizzato per decreto del Comune, a intervenire a tutti i Consigli. "E' fama che egli liberasse Pistoia dall'assedio degli spagnuoli, quando questi dettero il sacco a Prato" (Fioravanti, Capitolo XXVI). Ciò fu perchè prevalse il suo consiglio di consegnare la città ai Medici. Un ramo di questa famiglia, invece, si stabilì a Ferrara, con un Tommaso, addetto alla corte del Duca Ercole I, e vi rimase estinto nel secolo XVII. Figlio di Tommaso fu quell'Antonio, detto "il Pistoia", celebre poeta politica, tra i più importanti del proprio secolo. Dedicò, costui, a Isabella d'Este, ben 533 Sonetti faceti,
