Originaria, al dire del Galluppi, da Verona; godette nobiltà in Messina, nella quale città molti membri di detta famiglia vestirono la toga senatoria e furono ascritti alla nobile arci-confraternita della Pace e Bianchi, della quale tennero anche il governo. Un Niccolò, messinese, ottenne nel 1362 la concessione di due onze annuali, sui proventi delle gabelle e dei diritti della secrezia di Messina; un Antonio fu giudice della corte straticoziale di detta città nel 1421-22; un Melchiorre fu giudice del tribunale del Concistoro nel 1673, giudice della Gran Corte Criminale 1683 e 1689; un Francesco, dottore in leggi, fu assessore del consolato della seta di Messina 1714; un Tommaso, come figlio di Beatrice Umano, fu barone di Migliardo 1735, titolo che la figlia di detto Tommaso a nome Beatrice portò in casa Donato.
