Antica ed assai nobile famiglia napoletana, detta Campagnuola o Campagnuolo, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La famiglia è oriunda dalla Provenza ma si trasferì in Napoli nel 1266, al seguito di Carlo I d'Angiò, con Giacomo C., detto Pignone (anche con tale cognome verranno chiamati i suoi discendenti), che nel 1288 fu viceré in Terra di Bari e nel 1296 capitano di Napoli. Proprio dal predetto sovrano i feudi di Ortone, Carreto, Colle Pagano, Marsicello, Casal di Galli e Pignone. Un Rostaino, nel 1290, ottenne da re Carlo II d’Angiò la bagliva della terra di Castellana. La famiglia fu aggregata al Patriziato napoletano del Seggio di Montagna e fu insignito degli Ordini cavallereschi della Leonza e di San Giacomo della Spada.
