La famiglia Campanile è assai antica, originaria e patrizia della città di Ravello, dove fin dal 1273 trovavasi qualificata col titolo di sire, e dove era così ricca da mutuar danari al re Carlo I d'Angiò, fu pure annoverata fra le famiglie nobili delle città di Maiuri e di Cava. Trapiantatasi in Napoli, si rese più illustre per eminenti uffici e dignità e per essere stata nel 1585, nella persona di Aurelio, presidente della regia camera della sommaria, aggregata alla nobiltà di Trani nel seggio dell'Arcivescovato. Appartenne a questa famiglia Filiberto, chiaro autore del libro delle "Armi, ovvero insegne dei nobili. Napoli 1613". Nicola, abate di S. Trifone in Ravello, fu eletto vescovo di quella Città nel 1455. Rainaldo fu Razionale della Regia Camera nel 1500; Aurelio fu giureconsulto di gran vaglia e presidente della Regia Camera della Sommaria ed aggregato al Sedile detto dell'Arcivescovado della città di Trani, dove
