Antico feudo comitale Carolingio prima viscontado dal 1071 e poi marchesato di fatto sotto il potere vicariale. Dalla grande contea di Tintinanno, una parte di antica origine, fu a suo tempo, la rocca di Campiglio assai più antica della contea stessa. Infatti Campiglio d'Orcia fu feudo di una familgia di conti di origine Salica e cioè di conti della famiglia Carolingia, passata in Italia con gli eserciti di Carlo Magno e suoi discendenti. Questa consorteria, ripetesi di Sovrana e Salica esistenza, signoreggiò nel Senese e Grossetano, Sarteano, Fighine, San Casciano dei Bagni, marsciano ed altri luoghi della Valle del Paglia, di Orcia, delle Chiane dell'Ombrone senese. Assai grande questo comitato, per cui nei tempi avanti il mille, i dominanti di Campiglio, furono correntemente conosciuti sotto il nome di Visconti. D'azzurro, al Triregno papale posto in capo, sormontante un lambello di tre pendenti di rosso che divide due gigli d'oro posti ai lati di una bandiera d'argento caricata di due chiavi decussate del campo, addestrata da una chiave in palo d'oro e sinistrata da un leone rampante dello stesso; al monte all'italiana di sette cime di rosso posta 4, 3, movente dalla punta e cimato da un castello d'argento aperto e finestrato del campo con due torri equidistanti merlate alla guelfa di cui la sinistra più bassa. Lo scudo è accollato da un baldacchino d'oro ornato di porpora e caricato di una corona marchionale.
