Er war normannischer und feudaler Herkunft seit dem 11. Jahrhundert und hatte als Gründer einen James, der im 14. Jahrhundert lebte. Von Napopli aus verzweigte er sich an verschiedene Orte in Kalabrien, wo er mehrere Lehen hatte. Felice war Baron von Pietraformosa und Familie von Charles V; James Capit. Kavallerie von Karl V. im Jahre 1536; Muzio Baron von Acquaformosa; Giovanni Cav. von Malta; Michele Baron von S. Donato; und Francesco Baron von Lungro und Firmo und von Porcile (später Frascineta). Anderer Zweig. Die Vorfahren dieser Familie waren der wohlhabende Mugnaj von C., von dem die Nachkommen nach Padua zogen und den Namen ihres Herkunftslandes annahmen. Einige waren Lanari, andere widmeten sich Notar, Medizin und Anwaltschaft. 1626 dem Adelsrat von Padua zugeschrieben, wurde es in seinem Adel durch souveräne Resolutionen vom 23. März 1819 und 8. Juli 1820 bestätigt.
