Di origine normanna e feudataria fin dall'undicesimo secolo, ebbe per capostipite un Giacomo che viveva nel 1400. Da Napopli si diramò in diversi luoghi della Calabria, dove ebbe parecchi feudi. Felice fu barone di Pietraformosa e familiare di Carlo V; Giacomo capit. di cavalleria di Carlo V nel 1536; Muzio barone di Acquaformosa; Giovanni Cav. di Malta; Michele barone di S. Donato; e Francesco barone di Lungro e Firmo, e di Porcile (poi Frascineta). Altro ramo. Gli antenati di questa famiglia, erano ricchi Mugnaj di C., da cui i discendenti si trasferirono in Padova, assumendo il nome della loro patria di origine, ed alcuni furono lanari, altri si dedicarono al notariato, alla medicina e alll'avvocatura. Ascritta nel 1626 al Consiglio nobile di Padova, fu confermata nella sua nobiltà con sovrane risoluzioni 23 Marzo 1819 ed 8 Luglio 1820.
