La antigua familia patricia veneciana, de Capo d'Istria, figuraba entre las llamadas "Casas Nuevas", aunque cuyos miembros habían sido incluidos en el cierre patronal del Consiglio Maggior de 1297. Según muchos cronistas, los miembros de la familia Canal derivaron de dos núcleos distintos: uno originario de Altino, el otro de Ravenna, lo que explicaría el uso de dos escudos de armas diferentes. En cualquier caso, el primero de sus personajes que se conoce con certeza es un Doimo, floreciente en 1070. Hasta el siglo X, esta familia fue una de las venecianas más influyentes, distinguiéndose especialmente en el ámbito militar y diplomático. Incluso cuando Venecia fue anexionada al Reino Lombard-Veneto, entre 1817 y 1818, las cuatro ramas de la familia fueron reconocidas como nobles del Imperio austríaco.
