A antiga família patrícia veneziana, do Capo d'Istria, contava entre as chamadas "Casas Novas", embora cujos membros tenham sido incluídos no bloqueio do Maggior Consiglio de 1297. Segundo muitos cronistas, os membros da família Canal derivavam de dois núcleos distintos: um originalmente de Altino, o outro de Ravenna, o que explicaria o uso de dois brasões diferentes. De qualquer forma, o primeiro de seus personagens a ser conhecido com certeza é um Doimo, florescendo em 1070. Até o século X, essa família era uma das venezianas mais influentes, destacando-se especialmente nas esferas militar e diplomática. Mesmo quando Veneza foi anexada ao reino Lombard-Veneto, entre 1817 e 1818, os quatro ramos da família foram reconhecidos nobres do Império Austríaco.
