A família Canale se origina da numerosa linhagem dos Chiaravalle ou Chiaravallesi, senhores do Castello di Canale, e família famosa por ter disputado com o dos Atos ou Atteschi o domínio de sua terra natal: Todi. Nino em 1288 era o prefeito de Terni; Arrigo em 1297 arcebispo de Zadar. Em 1338, descobrimos que o chefe da família, como parte da nobreza tuderdina, interveio na constituição do estatuto da cidade. Giacomo em 1409 era o chefe nobre de Todi.
