La famiglia Canale trae la sua origine dalla numerosa stirpe dei Chiaravalle o Chiaravallesi, signori del Castello di Canale, e famiglia celebre per aver conteso a lungo con quella degli Atti o Atteschi il dominio della loro patria: Todi. Nino nel 1288 fu podestà di Terni; Arrigo nel 1297 arcivescovo di Zara. Nel 1338 troviamo che il capo famiglia come facente parte della nobiltà tuderdina interviene alla costituzione dello Statuto della città. Giacomo nel 1409, fu capopriore nobile di Todi. Per le vicende e lotte con i Degli Atti, i Chiaravallesi nel 1449 dovettero abbandonare la città, spargendosi nelle città vicine come Orvieto, Amelia, Civita Castellana; un ramo andò a stabilirsi a Terni (città sempre feudale ai Chiaravallesi) assumendo il nome di Canale dal castello omonimo di loro proprietà e posto nella riva destra del fosso o canale grande a sud di Castel dell'Aquila sul confine di Amelia.
