Famille espagnole très ancienne, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Europe et du monde. La tradition veut qu'il tire son nom du lieu du même nom, situé dans le district judiciaire de Murias de Paredes (León) ; ses représentants y appartenaient à la "hidalguía" et aussi à Villafranca del Bierzo, dans la même province. De là sont nées les nombreuses lignées familiales des Canales, y compris celle qui vivait dans la ville de Sahagún et dans laquelle ils sont nés : Diego, Hernando, Antonio et Melchor de Canales, habitants de la ville susmentionnée, qui ont démontré leur noblesse à Valladolid. respectivement en 1536, 1544 et 1577.
