Die alte Patrizierfamilie von Rieti gilt als Kadettenzweig der Temano-Familie des Kanals. Zu ihren berühmtesten Geburten gehört ein Lodovico, Sohn des Kavaliers Nevio, tapferer Soldat, der 1619 in Ungarn dem Kaiser Ferdinand II. Diente und in den Kriegen von Alemagna hatte er den Rang eines Kapitäns. Gregor XV. Schickte ihn zum Hauptmann in die Valtellina. Später im Krieg zwischen dem Herzog von Modena und dem Kaiser verdiente er es, zum Generalkommissar, Leutnant und Generalleutnant ernannt zu werden, und derselbe Herzog verlieh ihm für seine vielen Verdienste den Titel eines Marquis über ein Lehen namens Altavilla, das er kaufte in Monferrato. Gesendet, dann 1632 Botschafter beim König von Frankreich, wurde er von ihm zum Feldmeister ernannt und vier Jahre später zum Marschall von zwanzig Kompanien erklärt.
