Al dir di illustri genealogisti, i membri della famiglia di Forlì sarebbero una diramazione di quelli di Bergamo, colà radicatasi nel secolo XVI; le armi delle due famiglie sono, però, diverse. Parimenti vuolsi che un altro ramo si sia stabilito nelle Marche, ove avrebbe modificato l'originario cognome in Canestrini. Mancando d'elementi per giudicare di tutto ciò, ci limiteremo a dire che il primo di questa famiglia forlivese, nel quale c'incontriamo, é un Francesco, morto l'anno 1622 e tumulato con una lapide molto onorifica nella soppressa chiesa di S. Agostino. Girolamo, di lui figlio, il 22 nov. 1655 ospitò in una casa sua presso Forlimpopoli la regina Cristina di Svezia, e fu padre di Giuseppe Maria (n. 1630), distinto matematico. Giovanni, d'altro Giuseppe Maria, avvocato, n. 1727 dec. 1809, venne coi suoi fratelli, posteri e successori in perpetuo, ascritto al patriziato di Forlì il 10 febbr. 1792; donde il diritto al
