Devesi puramente al caso se l'ordine alfabetico di questa rassegna pospone la cronologia del maestro a quella del discepolo entrambi capitani di ventura e di sventure al soldo di chi meglio li retribuiva. Sull'origine pavese di questa famiglia stabilitasi a Casale nel XIV sec. sono in linea di massima concordi i vari autori che di essa trattano: poichè ciò è attestato da documenti inoppugnabili... nulla da obiettare; desideriamo tuttavia, non certo per sollevare dubbi, soffermarci un po' su tali origini. Oltre che a Pavia, i C. o Canibus erano presenti anche a Voghera, Tortona Alessandria sin dal XII secolo: nel capoluogo ticinese furono investiti più volte del mandato consolare; a Voghera nella prima metà del 1100 partecipano con le famiglie preminenti del luogo alla costituzione del Comune Signorile Vogherese, analogamente a quanto istituito in Tortona nel 1122 onde sottrarsi alla sovranità d'oltralpe; ed il Cavagna
