Antonio del Passagno, en la región del Véneto, un famoso escultor, con muchas de sus obras adquirió fama europea y fue considerado como el restaurador de la escultura, la moderna Fidias. Ilustre protector del arte y los artistas, instituyó premios para los merecedores, alentó a los jóvenes estudiantes, ejecutó muchos y muchos bustos de ilustres hombres antiguos a su costa, que colocó en los pasillos del Capitolio. Pío VII nombró a Canova inspector de antigüedades y bellas artes en ROma y con motu proprio el 14 de febrero de 1816, fue creado por el mismo Pontífice Roman Knight, y luego fue decorado con el título de marqués y su nombre fue inscrito en el libro de oro. Consulta del Senatus el 14 de febrero de 1816.
