An Antonio del Passagno, in Veneto, a famous sculptor, with many of his works he acquired European fame and was considered to be the restorer of the sculpture, the modern Phidias. An illustrious protector of art and artists, he instituted prizes for the deserving, encouraged young students, executed many and many busts of illustrious ancient men at his expense, which he placed in the halls of the Capitol. Pius VII appointed Canova inspector of antiquities and fine arts in ROma and with motu proprio on February 14, 1816 he was created by the same Pontiff Roman Knight, and then decorated with the marquis title and his name was inscribed in the golden book. Senatus consultation 14 February 1816.
