Antica e nobile famiglia di Urbino. Fu suo capostipite un Ser Ludovico, di Gianfrancesco, di Ludovico, di Balbo giurista e consigliere ducale. Baldo fu della famiglia Cantagallina di Perugia e aveva fissato la sua dimora in Urbino nel 1450 circa, ma nella nuova dimora mai usò il proprio cognome. Questo Ser Ludovico sposò la contessa Maria Galli, ultima discendente di nobilissima e illustre famiglia urbinate, la quale oltre portargli in dote un cospicuo patrimonio e un magnifico palazzo, gli portò il feudo comitale di Poggio Santa Maria, come risulta dal rogito del 9 agosto 1599, col quale egli acquista il suddetto feudo con il titolo di conte di Poggio Santa Maria. Da quest'epoca egli comincia a chiamarsi con il cognome Palma, che aveva assunto dal simbolo "la foglia di palma" della nobile famiglia Galli.
