Famiglia mantovana della quale si hanno notizie nel secolo XIII con un Cantonus de Cantono che copriva la carica di consigliere nel comune della città di Mantova. Sembra per altro non vi avesse la famiglia stabile dimora se uno Stefano Cantoro vi si stabilì la metà del secolo XVII. Ebbe il titolo comitale nel 1759 col diploma dell'imperatrice Maria Teresa. Un ramo di questa famiglia si stabilì in Faenza, ove, nel 1873, si estinse. Un Antonio, faentino, fu vescovo prima nella sua città poi, nel 1767, arcivescovo di Ravenna ove abbellì la metropolitana e vi compì tali opere di bene e di carità da acquistarsi la fama di Santo. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco nobiliare ufficiale col titolo di conte (mpr.) in persona di: Michele, di Stefano, di Girolamo ed i suoi figli: Girolamo, Giulia, Maria Luigia, Massimiliano, Antonio, Stefano e Clemente.
