Vogliono alcuni Scrittori che questa Famiglia abbia comune la sua origine con i Conti di Canossa di Verona. Sin dal 1180 trovasi stabilita in Friuli. Roberto de C. a quell'epoca era Gastaldo della Città di Cividale, ed essa fu costantemente ascritta al Consiglio di quella Città, da cui e deriva la sua nobiltà. Nel 1303 ebbe dal Patriarca Ottobono di Aquileia in Feudo il Castello di Orzone poscia distrutto. Dalla Repubblica Veneta fu investita delle giurisdizioni di Vercaglia, Obblizza e Schirò. E' altresì aggregata come nobile ai Consigli provinciali di Gorizia, e del Ducato della Carniola. Esistono due rami uno domiciliato a Cividale, altro domiciliato a Tapogliano. Del ramo che domicilia a Cividale, confermato con Sovrana Risoluzone 24 novembre 1820, si ricordano: Ettore Antonio Maria del fu Niccolò e della si. Paolina baronessa Locatelli, nato il 29 dicembre 1775, ammogliatosi il 21 novembre 1803 colla nobil sig. Francesca de Portis;
