Questa famiglia ebbe origine nel Cilento, ove trovano memorie di essa fin dal tempo di Enrico VI. Ha goduto nobiltà nelle città di Napoli al seggio di Nido, Salerno al seggio di Portaretese, S.Pietro in Galatina, e nel Cilento. Un ramo dei Capana si estinse nei sue fratelli Alfonso e Pietro che furono uccisi da' ladri, nella propria casa sita presso la Chiesa di San Severino. Essi ebbero due sorelle maritate l'una nella famiglia Muscettola, l'altra nella famiglia Gaeta, ed erano proprietari della lanterna del Molo, che poi fu acquistata dal Ministro Acton per conto del Governo. La famiglia Capana fu subfeudataria della Casa Sanseverino. Si legge nella "Storia napoletana" del Costanzo, che il Ferdinando I d'Aragona fece un accordo con Roberto Sanseverino, Principe di Salerno, e fra gli altri patti, vi furono: il permesso accordato ad esso Roberto di coniar monete, purché sopra una delle due facce vi fosse
