Antica ed assai nobile famiglia meridionale, della quale si trovano chiare memorie nelle regioni napoletane, sin dall'undicesimo secolo. Nel periodo svevo fu annoverata tra le famiglie feudatarie ma un Tommaso, partigiano di re Manfredi, subì da Carlo I d'Angiò la confisca di tutti i suoi beni. Più tardi Giovanni e Roberto furono creati cavalieri. Un Pietro fu tesoriere del Regno (1275) mentre un Giosuè, che ebbe sepoltura nella Chiesa di S. Chiara (1323), militò con re Roberto in Lombardia. Luigi († Tours 1503), figlio di Giosuè († 1431), patrizio napoletano, Governatore della Real Casa Santa dell’Annunziata di Napoli, sposò Diana d’Alessandro del Seggio di Portanova; nel 1497 fu decorato col titolo di marchese di Ariano e nel 1501 col titolo di duca di Ariano, feudo in Principato Ultra. Nello stesso anno seguì re Federico I d'Aragona, ultimo re aragonese, in esilio in Francia e i suoi titoli furono cancellati. Figlio
