Antigua y muy noble familia del sur, de la que hay claros recuerdos en las regiones napolitanas, según recuerda De Nicastro, desde el siglo XI. En el período suabo se contaba entre las familias feudales y un Tommaso, partidario del rey Manfredi, sufrió la confiscación de todas sus posesiones de Carlos I de Anjou. Más tarde, Giovanni y Roberto fueron creados caballeros; Peter tesorero del Reino (1275); Joshua quien fue enterrado en la Iglesia de S. Chiara (1323) luchó con el rey Roberto en Lombardía. Luigi († Tours 1503), hijo de Giosuè († 1431), patricio napolitano, gobernador de la Real Casa Santa de la Anunciación de Nápoles, se casó con Diana d'Alessandro del Seggio di Portanova; en 1497 fue condecorado con el título de marqués de Ariano y en 1501 con el título de duque de Ariano, feudo en el Principato Ultra.
