Este apellido es originario del Principado de Bearne, en Francia, en el que tuvo casa solar que se llamó casa de Meritain. Una de sus ramas moró en la ciudad de Tudela (Navarra). Así consta en documentos de la Nobleza ejecutoriada de Navarra, en los que se manifiesta que en el año de 1729 "don Pedro y D. José de C. Serrat, hermanos y vecinos de Tudela, dijeron eran originarios y descendientes por su apellido C. de la casa de Meritain, y por el de Serrat de la casa de Serrat, del lugar de Jeus, ambos en el Principado de Bearne, y que eran solares de nobleza y que les tocaba la misma, lo que se mandó así." En dicho año de 1729 obtuvieron, pues, esos dos hermanos C. ejecutoria de hidalguía, y en el de 1731 solicitaron que esa ejecutoria se asentase en los libros reales de la Cámara, lo que también se mandó así.
