Ebbe per capo stipite Stefano vivente nel 1107, signore di Civitavecchia e d'Alatro, dal quale feudo prese il nome di Latro. Fece parte del monte Capece istituito nel 1584; ed à goduto nobiltà in Napoli nel seggio di Capuana e in Caserta. Da Ragone signore di Fraina discesero i Capecelatro duchi di Nevano, di Morrone e i marchesi Capecelatro; da Giovanni signor di Ardore e Pazzigno vennero i duchi di Castelpagano; ed Ettore marchese del Torello dette origine ai duchi di Siano. Ha goduto ben 42 feudi oltre la contea di Olvito avuta nel 1210, quattro marchesati, e sei ducati. Stefano Scuatore di Roma nel 1190; Goffredo Cardinale nel 1261; Paricio Vicerè di Sardegna; Riccardo Vescovo di Montecorvino; Giuseppe nel 1778 Arciv. di Taranto.
