Ancient and noble English family, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread over the centuries, with main branches in Holland, in the city of Dordrecht, in France, in Languedoc and in Provence, and in Germany, in the city of Heidelberg. The Capel family descends from Sir Arthur Capel of Raines Hall in Essex and of Hadham in Hertfordshire. His grandson Arthur Capel represented Hertfordshire in both the Short and Long Parliaments. In 1641 he was raised to the Peerage of England as Baron Capel of Hadham but he later fought as a Royalist in the Civil War so he was tried and condemned to death by the Parliamentarians and beheaded in May 1649. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baron that, in 1661, was created Viscount Malden and Earl of Essex. Lord Essex served as Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland and as First Lord of the Treasury.
