Fosse stipite di questa famiglia un Ruggero di Taranto, il quale era l'anno 1173 sotto Re Goglielmo il Tristo, Luogoteta,e Protonotario del Regno. Era cosí cognominato per eccellenza dalla patria, ovvero dall'abitazione, che i suoi maggiori fecero in Taranto: benché i successori ora dal nome celebre di Roberto, figliuolo per avventura del Gran Protonotario, Domini Roberti, e ora della Signoria di Capitagnano si cognominarono. Fu Capitignano luogo antico, posto in Terra d'Otranto, e trasferito sotto Re Roberto l'anno 1320 ad un sito a lui propinquo detto Scolcola. Angelo Crasullo, Notaro, che lasció notare molte cose occorse a suoi tempi, e le scrisse nel 1415 dice Cogita quos vidimus in magno laberinto subterraneo, Tarenti domus Capitignani de Tarento sunt anni 300 ex quibus binc seudataÿ de domo Domini Roberti. Appare ben di certo Goffredo cognominato da Taranto aver preso a censo l'anno 1269. Capitignano dall'Abbate di S. Andrea di Brindisi. Roberto
