Famiglia ritenuta d'origine longobarda, detta Capoano, Capuano o Capuana, della quale si hanno antichissime memorie in Amalfi, ove era annoverata fra le più illustri. Si diramò a Napoli, sotto gli Angioini, e fu aggregata ai seggi di Nido e Portauova, ed in quest'ultimo sino all'abolizione generale dei sedili. Molti gli illustri personaggi che in essa rifulsero. Ricordiamo, a tal proposito: Pietro, creato Cardinale Celestino III, il quale portò il corpo di S. Andrea ad Amalfi; Luigi Vescovo di Ravello; altro Pietro, creato Cardinale nel 1221; Matteo, che fu Mastro Razionale e vicario del Gran Camerlengo del Regno; Gregorio, che, nel 1319, comprò la città di Boiano della baronia di Prata e fu signore di molti castelli; Matteo e Giovanni, vescovi di Amalfi; Annicchino, sepolto a Napoli nella Chiesa di S.
