It is widely acknowledged that the families Capocci, Capoccia and Capocciama are a unique lineage. Therefore this family flourished in Viterbo, Rome and Perugia and then spread throughout the world. The origin of this surname should be sought in a modification of the late Latin cognomen "Capoccius" and the first evidence of the family in Rome dates back to 1073. Parented to other noble families, including the Crescenzi, the Orsini and the Colonna (c. 14th), this House had among its members Senators, like Giovanni (1194-96), a partisan of Otto IV and bitter opponent of Innocent III, and Giacomo, in 1254; Cardinals, like Pietro (d. 1259) and Niccolò (d. Montefiascone 1368), one of the four cardinal which was entrusted with the reform of the government in Rome after the fall of Cola di Rienzo; Mayors, like Giovanni in Perugia (1223); but the best known is the ghibelline Angelo, who was elected
