La famiglia de' Capogalli è romana antica. Nel Catasto del Salvatore, si fa menzione di un Mattiolo de Capogalli del Rione di Trevi, sotto il dì 24 maggio 1331. Il Petrone nel suo Diario, sotto l'anno 1434, racconta che alcuni nobili Cittadini romani volsero ricuperare dalle mani del Papa il governo di Roma tra' quali era Ianni Capogalli e Oddo, Menico e Antonio suoi figlioli, e che sotto l'anno 1443 Papa Eugenio donò abiti ricchi ad 80 nobili romani, tra' quali fu Tomaso Cappgalli. E da quel tempo e prima, ha parentato sempre nobilmente colli Velli, coli Vallati, colli Boccamazzi, colli Andreozzi, colli Boccapaduli e altri, e goderono li onori del Campidoglio, come dal registro di Gasparo Salviano. e negli istromenti vengono enunciati nobili.
