Antichi e nobili castellani e feudatari, sino dal 1501 ebbero parte nel generale parlamento friulano. Fino dal 962 questa famiglia fu dall'Imperatore Ottone I qualificata dell'ordine dei nobili liberi, e confermata in detto ordine nel 1220 dall'Imperatore Federico II. Nel 1457 Francesco di Caporiaco fu investito dal patriarca di Aquileia del castello e beni di Caporiaco con giurisdizione di mero e misto impero. La Repubblica Veneta riconobbe la suddetta investitura feudale con lettere ducali del 1620, 1696 e 1746 e fregiò i Caporiaco del titolo di Conti. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e de' maggiori.
