La famiglia, originaria di Verona, e potentissima, é ricordata dall'Alighieri insieme alla gente dei Montecchi, famose ambedue per la cacciata di Azzo, marchese di Ferrara e governatore di Verona. Si stabilì in Rieti verso il 1300. Tazio, nel 1320, fu profondo filosofo; Rodolfo valente nelle armi, sotto l'imperatore Ottone IV; Giuseppe, di Paolo, ebbe la investitura delle baronie di S. Maria di Ponte e di Rocca Pretara e Giuseppe di Mario fu al servizio del re Carlo III di Spagna. Benedetto, dal 1764 al 1834, fu governatore pontificio di Viterbo, di Macerata, di Urbino, di Pesaro e di Roma e nel 1832 fu creato cardinale da Gregorio XVI.
