La famiglia trasse il nome dalla terra di Capranica. Fu innalzata dai fratelli Pietro ed Angelo cardinale di S. R. C., Domenico fu elevato alla porpora da Martino V nel 1426 ed Angelo da Pio II nel 1460. Jacopo fu conte dell'Anguillara e signore di Leprignano nel 1431. Paolo fu arcivescovo di Benevento nel 1435. Angelo vescovo di Rieti nel 1498. Nicolò vescovo di fermo nella stessa epoca. In questa famiglia si estinsero due nobili case, Cavalieri e del Grillo, ambedue insignite del titolo di marchese e che portano in casa della suddetta famiglia tutti i loro titoli e privilegi. Angelo nel XV secolo, fratello del cardinale Domenico fu dal 1447 vescovo di Ascoli e poi nel 1460 cardinale in Rieti. Domenico dal 1440-1458 fu cardinale e vescovo di Fermo, attivissimo in diplomazia e in guerra. Luigi fu dal 1844 guardia nobile del Papa, nel 1850 fu esule per patriottismo.
