Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, della quale si trovano chiare memorie nelle regioni napoletane ed in Emilia, ove era conosciuta come Caprara, passata successivamente in Trentino e trascritta come Capraro. Nel periodo svevo fu annoverata tra le famiglie feudatarie ed un Tommaso, partigiano di re Manfredi, subì da Carlo I d'Angiò la confisca di tutti i suoi beni ma più tardi Giovanni e Roberto furono creati cavalieri. Ricordiamo ancora: Pietro, tesoriere del Regno (1275); Giosuè che ebbe sepoltura nella Chiesa di S. Chiara (1323) e che militò con re Roberto in Lombardia. Luigi fu regio familiare ed ambasciatore dell'ultimo re d'Aragona che volle seguire nel suo esilio in Francia. Figlio di Luigi fu Annibale, regio consigliere, che partecipò nell'esercito di Carlo V alla battaglia di Pavia ed alla presa della Goletta. Dei suoi tre figliuoli: Marcello, morì nel 1556 nel milanese combattendo per Filippo II; Camillo fu padre di Elia,
