Caprello es el primer nombre seguro de esta familia, por lo que los descendientes se llamaron De Capra o de Caprellis. En 1172, Umberto hizo leyes a la Villa di Carrè, de las cuales sus antepasados tenían plena jurisdicción otorgada por los emperadores germánicos. Habiendo construido la villa Carrè en el condado, los Capra fueron decorados con el título de Conti. El emperador Perdinando III con diploma el 24 de febrero de 1648 otorgó el título de marqués a Odorico Capra. Numerosos autores de la familia describieron eventos y personajes, atribuyéndole diversos orígenes sin ningún certificado válido. Sobre la base segura de los documentos, la crítica histórica moderna ha explicado las reconstrucciones genealógicas artificiales de aquellos escritores que, por complaciente espíritu de adulación, afirmaron que esta familia descendía de prosapias nobles y antiguas como la de otras familias.
