Terra aleramica soggetta agli irrequieti marchesi Del Bosco, cinta di poderose mura e gagliardo castello, Capriata fu nei primi secoli del mille retta in vassallaggio da alcune famiglie che riunitesi in consortile assunsero come comune patronimico il nome del luogo. Nel 1202 i marchesi Ottone ed Enrico rinunciarono alla signoria di Capriata che si assoggettò al comune di Genova al quale Enrico marchese di Ussecio vende la sua parte nel 1217; detto Ottone, suo figlio e nipoti, invece, nel 1218 cedono quanto di loro pertinenza al comune di Alessandria; insorte delle complicazioni rivendono nel 1224 la loro parte a Genova sollevando la reazione degli alessandrini che aprono le ostilità cessate con la pace del 1227; pace effimera perchè infrangendo ogni accordo, nel 1228 gli alessandrini si riprendono e distruggono Capriata; i genovesi, ai quali venne restituita nel 1231, vi costruirono un nuovo castello proteggendola con ben muniti bastioni.
