Entre as mais antigas e nobres famílias napolitanas, que desempenharam um papel absolutamente decisivo nos acontecimentos histórico-políticos do sul da Itália. Muitos estudiosos defendem a origem bizantina dos Caracciolos, fazendo-os descender de um ramo da família imperial de Constantinopla, que viveu no Oriente e chamou de "Catacolo" ou "Caracolo", mais tarde Caracciolo. A esposa do imperador Arcádio, Eudóxia, que viveu no século IV d.C., fazia parte do "Caracolo" de Bizâncio. Caracciolo.
