Fin verso la metà del secolo XII risalgono le memorie scarse ma indubitate intorno a questa famiglia che in allora era chiamata con l'originario cognome de' Risi, al quale appunto sono allusive le spighe di riso dell'arma gentilizia. I due cognomi sul principio del secolo XV coesistono e si alternano, ma poi prevale definitivamente quello attuale.
