Ricerche sull'origine di questa famiglia escludono che possano sussistere nessi con le omonime localitá di Carbonara Scrivia e Carbonara Lomellina (oggi Carbonara al Ticino) sebbene il Casalis alla voce relativa asserisca che quest'ultima "fu feudo di una famiglia di Pavia che ne portava il nome"; famiglia tuttora irreperibile e quasi certamente mai esistita. Il Goggi nel suo volumetto "Notizie storiche su Carbonara Scrivia" li ignora, sebbene siano noti casi isolati di singoli che per una pié identificazione aggiunsero al proprio nome il luogo d'origine rimasto poi come cognome; infatti Lorenzo C. del fu Rocco esercitó il notariato a Tortona nei secoli XIV-XV e Guglielmo di Giovanni in C. stessa nel secolo XVI (Matricola dei notari che rogarono nel Tortonese tra il secolo XIV ed il XVIII).
